Cultural appropriation. Misogyny and racism. Postcolonialism and political correctness. This Ghent-based duo, who burst onto the scene in 2019 with their EP Zandoli, are unconventional storytellers on the electronica scene.
Their debut album, Tropical Dancer, released recently by Soulwax’s Deewee Records, is a masterpiece of hard-hitting, irreverent electro pop and clever lyrics that gauge the temperature of the current moment. If you’re not getting their jibes, it’s because you’re not paying attention.
Energetic synths and playful rhythms camouflage a strong critique of the political and social issues that have shaped their experiences as two Europeans of immigrant descent. Theirs is a delicious and critically acclaimed manifesto that moves to the rhythms of house, techno and R&B and is sure to set the dancefloor on fire next June at Paraíso 2022.
