Mula
Among the waters of the Caribbean Sea a melody can be heard. They are not sirens’ calls, but beats covered in sweetness, merengue and bachata, channelled through synthesizers, samples and electrical drums, that attract anyone who hears them. Three women can be glimpsed at the other side of the water, on the Dominican mainland, and they go by the name Mula.
It was in 2015 that Rachel Rojas and the twins Anabel and Cristabel Acevedo embarked on a journey towards the Caribbean of the future to return its sound to us. The outcome is a tropical explosion, so plastic that it is almost malleable, not to be touched, but danced to. And how.
While making their presence felt on the Latin underground scene, they inject their danceable and contagious poison around venues and festivals across America. It’s Madrid’s turn. At Paraíso, Mula will present their universe of sound as well as of aesthetics and ideology. Credited with two albums and a third one on the way, it can be said that this is how the Caribbean of the future sounds.
Bob Moses
Bob Moses, the Vancouver-bred duo consisting of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, came to life in the Brooklyn underground scene in 2012. Early single releases on taste-making electronic label Scissor & Thread led to signing with Domino and the late 2015 release of their debut album Days Gone By.
Meshing guitar licks, a moody smolder and a dash of dance-floor ambience with lyrical depth and classic songwriting, the duo created a sound that appeals equally to club goers and rock music fans. Translating their sound seamlessly to the live performance realm, years of nonstop global touring – including appearances at every major festival from Glastonbury and Coachella, to EDC, Lollapalooza and beyond – cemented the duo’s reputation as a must see live act. A standout performance on The Ellen Show, a pair of nominations at both the Junos and the Grammys (and a Grammy win), and a top 15 US Alternative radio hit with “Tearing Me Up,” have further sealed the band’s burgeoning mainstream success.
May 2018 saw the announcement of a headline US tour and the release of track “Heaven Only Knows,” the first new music from the next exciting phase for Bob Moses.
Young Marco
For over a decade now, Marco Sterk a.k.a. Young Marco has been one of the key pieces in understanding the Dutch underground. Finally, the person that was long the best-kept secret of this scene has become well known in booths all over the world because of his eclecticism by travelling down innovative paths where proto-house bumps into Middle East disco music, or where Afro gems go out to meet vibrant techno.
His merits in music are not limited to his career as a DJ. He’s also a producer and runs his own label, Safe Trip, from where he uncovers to the world new talents that observe electronica from new perspectives.
His obsession with the unexpected and unusual has become his trademark. Let yourself be carried away, because Young Marco will conquer your heart, but also your hips.
Orpheu The Wizard
Straight from the cosmos, this master of the decks delights us time and again with his otherworldly sets. Wherever he lands, soon the word spreads that there’s a wizard in the booth. It is difficult to describe what happens in his sets. The Dutchman isn’t afraid of the unexpected, so you’ll be able to find him taking turns without fearing the unknown.
In Orpheu The Wizard, the South American sound landscape he carries in his DNA coexists with the beats he’s been listening to from a young age in his hometown, Amsterdam. As co-founder of Red Light Radio closely linked to Dekmantel, the wizard has become one of the most revered names in the Dutch scene.
As versatile as he is eclectic, Orpheu de Jong will don the wears of his alter ego, Orpheu The Wizard, to turn Paraíso upside down with his farsightedness, depth of taste and passion to mix. Don’t take your eyes off him.
Nicola Cruz
His passion for the landscapes, cultures and rhythms of his adopted home makes Nicola Cruz irradiate an intimate understanding of nature, note after note. The result is an exploration of ancient myths and traditions of Ecuadorian folklore with which he pairs irresistible beats.
With his new album, Siku (ZZK Recordings, 2019), Nicola Cruz turns his gaze to different parts of the world to conceive a dual dynamic—in which the ancestral flows through contemporary compositions—that has been carved with artists, rhythms and instruments that have persisted throughout time.
Paraíso will be the first stop in Spain where he will delight us with his new work, Siku, alongside visual artist Fidel Eljuri. A contagious live performance that will give free rein to new tracks, rhythms and melodies with which Nicola Cruz takes new creative directions without forgetting the spark and warmth with which he ignites all his live shows.
Maribou State
Chris Davids and Liam Ivory continue to explore the limits of a live electronic performance. The Britons propose a colourful and immersive sound universe with which they capture textures and rhythms that seem to have always existed, indifferent to the passage of time, by being endowed with an exquisite timelessness.
After having toured all corners of the five continents, Davids and Ivory started to assemble a sound collage with the ideas they gathered and the recordings they made in Asia, Australia, Morocco, America and beyond. The result is the spectacular Kingdoms In Colour, released by Ninja Tunes’ imprint, Counter Records, in 2018.
With this album and their acclaimed first record from 2015, Portraits, Maribou State guide us on a pleasant stroll that passes through soulful house, r&b, blues, bass and pop: a formula that has catapulted and consolidated the career of this duet whose live show is much more than music. It’s the fountain of eternal youth.
KiNK
As if it were a signature cocktail, KiNK takes the spirit and the groove of house and techno and, before shaking it, he adds a good dose of futurism, drops of experimental electronica and a bit of the unleashed energy of acid. The result he obtains is a potentially dangerous combination that can reach a fetish level for lovers of retro.
Strahil Velchev is known for being much more than a professional agitator of dance floors: he’s also one of the contemporary artists that has best dovetailed funk with techno and house. His passion for the old sound of electronica and his unconditional love for futurism sparked his early interest in production, which has ultimately led him to be one of the most sought-after artists of his native Bulgaria.
In his live shows, KiNK commands, with striking ease, a troop of analogical synthesizers and controllers that leads us to think that beats, rather than blood, run through his veins.
